Putu is sold by street vendors and made on site. The seller pushes a small amount of rice flour &#8216;dough&#8217; (often with pandan and therefore green in color) into a bamboo mold, then a scoop of Javanese sugar (Gula Jawa) and again a bit of rice flour mix. In the bamboo mold, the whole thing is steamed over a large pan, causing the sugar to melt. It is ready in a few minutes and the putu is tapped out of the bamboo mold and topped with freshly grated coconut. Enjoy your meal and don&#8217;t burn your lips with the hot sugar!
